Are Study Groups Important?

Eugene Study Group. Meets Mondays at Liz Cratty's home. Left to right: Pam and Gabe MacIsaac, Rick Cosci, Claude and Kelly Elstrott. Photo by Liz.

Yes. Study groups serve several functions. They enhance understanding of the concepts in the book, encourage and inspires us by contact with fellow readers, serve as a check to prevent us from getting carried away by our own perspectives, etc.
—Jerry Prentice

Study groups are part of the design for the dissemination of the teachings of The Urantia Book on our planet. Study groups enable new readers to benefit from the experience of seasoned readers. They enable seasoned readers to be enlightened by the insights and wonderful questions of beginners. And they enable both groups to realize that the difference between beginners and seasoned readers is eclipsed in the joy of our spirit equality.
—Jeff Wattles

Yes, to air the revelation in front of peers in order that misinterpretations do not go unchallenged. And as a socializing agent for believing siblings, an affirmation that we agree that this is truly a revelation from the agencies that reveal God and his plans to the universes. As a catalyst for action and fraternity, for within the study group movement lay the seeds for an unprecedented Organization of the future that will take Urantia by love.
—Rick Warren

Attending a study group is very important. It engages your personality in social exercise, it leads you to commit to a periodic length of time to reflect on the only things of real importance in life, and it lets the light of your candle touch the wicks of those whose candle has not yet flared to its potential. Personalities don’t function in solitude, so when two people or more get together, there is the mind of Jesus among them. Not only that, but study groups are enlightening, enriching, and fun. Go find one, and participate vigorously!
—Dodger

Yes! They are VERY important to me! They help me socialize my interpretation of the book, and they provide me with a social outlet of friends whom I truly LOVE as my dearest brothers and sisters. They are my family!
—Joy Brandt

Isolated reading as I see it can sometimes lead to poor comprehension, where as many voices at the table usually leads to better understanding and service.
—Ed Owen

Essential. I believe the great value of study groups is in the bonding of the brotherhood through sharing, clarifying, and enhancing our understanding of the truths we garner and internalize from the book...and are hopefully becoming in increasing measure.
—Judy Van Cleave

Yes! Study groups are very important when they enlarge our concepts of spiritual and cosmic realities. A more intelligent and civilized world depends on our knowledge of and personal experience with spiritual realities. But the theory of The Urantia Book is useless, even a detriment, without practical application. A mature study group will model better ways of communicating across differences. And when study groups become dreadfully serious, they will create warm hospitality and fun for a balance.
It’s always about balance, isn’t it? And study groups are only one part of a balanced approach to spiritual growth. I believe that it’s also important to study alone, listen to and reflect with the spirit within. It also helps to write or create art or music about spiritual experiences. We need to commune with and worship God in a way that is sincere and natural. Very importantly, we need to find our passion, our gift from God and dedicate that gift to serving others. Most importantly, we need to really love at least one person unconditionally.

For a study group to be important, it will center its study and activities on the personal experience of divine love.
—Sue Tennant

They improve the reality response and UB acculturation and pursue the revelatory experience in day-to-day life.
—Stephen Caruso

For me, the most important study groups are the ones we have within families. There is no better way to help the next generation’s lives than by making the time to study these marvelous teachings with our children. Yes, we often have to adapt and select the material to relate to their level. However, the payoffs are big. What possible thrill could be bigger for a parent than to see the love for their Creator also reflected in the eyes of your child! All study groups are important; family study is the most important.
—Lee Armstrong

Study groups are important because they are our (The Urantia Revelation’s) social framework. The term that describes this social framework in The Urantia Book is cult. One of the dictionaries definitions of a cult is: A usually small circle of persons united by devotion or allegiance to an artistic or intellectual movement or figure. The UB advises: “The cult is the skeletal structure around which grows the living and dynamic body of personal spiritual experience--true religion.”  And, “No cult can survive if it retards moral growth and fails to foster spiritual progress.” (pg 966-5)  Further, “True religion is the only power which can lastingly increase the responsiveness of one social group to the needs and sufferings of other groups.” (pg 1087-2)
—Jeanette Schafer

Yes. Need interaction with other readers to exchange understandings, plus socializing.
—Rawlins Apperson

Often, when individuals seek to gain a deep appreciation and understanding of the teachings of The Urantia Book, they find it helpful to study the book with others. The local, informal study group is the place where teamwork is forged and spiritual growth is fostered; it is the primary social and educational arena for disseminating the teachings of The Urantia Book. Much is gained from sharing insights, interpretations, experiences, and understandings with others, therefore many people enjoy attending study groups in their local areas.

It Gets Better. And Better.

by Nancy Shaffer

The first reading of The Urantia Book can be a daunting undertaking. It provides experiences like “I have read this sentence five times and I now realize that I definitely do not understand it” and “Wow” and “I KNEW it!” For some of us it sharpens questions, conflicts, doubts. For many it awakens a willingness to dare to hope, perhaps to begin to actually believe, that it is all true, that God does not play tricks on mere mortals, that this book is a manifestation of his will, that it is part of the outworking of the divine plan. Because the teachings of the Urantia Book are so unique, it is especially helpful during the first reading to have a group of other readers to ask questions and with whom one can share and discuss the teachings.  It is also very helpful and reassuring to associate with other people who have similar spiritual goals.

The second reading of the Urantia Book is easier, but it reveals how much was not understood or was forgotten after the first reading.  The experiences of “Hey, I didn’t remember that was in there” begin, as does the first realization that what you are getting out of the book has changed because you have changed.  The other members of a study group offer the opportunity for the experience of “Does it really say that?  Where?” and all variations on that theme.

If the first or second readings don’t generate a desire to compare recurring issues in different parts of the book, the third one is bound to. There are so many “threads” to pursue. Life experiences are all judged against some teaching or idea from the book. The other members of a study group provide additional perspectives and understanding fellowship in the process of mastering the book and its teachings.

The fourth reading confirms that “mastery” of the teachings is a relative term. One could memorize the entire book but still not understand its teachings. At some point, sooner or later, the fact that one cannot expect to fully understand all of the truth revealed in the Urantia Book in this life hits with full force, along with the realization that you want to keep reading it over and over because it is true, beautiful, and good; because it provides a sense that you can reach through and touch that other, spiritual universe inhabited by midwayers, angels and all of the other beings in God’s creations; and because trying to understand actually increases understanding and increased understanding actually does help you to be a better person. With the other members of your study group, you begin to bring into being in your own life and in your own experience, to actualize, a spiritual brotherhood. And all of the readers you know form an expanded study group, an extended brotherhood. And when you meet readers for the first time, you know they are part of that brotherhood. And that is good.

In Recognition

by Jeanette Schafer
OUA President

It is almost here, my term in office will soon end and there are people I wish to thank for their support in the last two years. So I will take this opportunity to say thank you to those who contributed in so many ways.

I would like to extend my appreciation to Liz Cratty and Dennis Gray who served as interim officers during my term. And a special note of appreciation goes to the current board for which it has been my privilege to serve on. They are all seasoned and devoted members of our association. Pat Murnin has done a quality job matching new readers with study groups as well as taking on the duties of an association secretary. And MC, what would we have done without Mario? Or rather, it’s more like what doesn’t Mario do for the association? I never ceased to be amazed at his creative energy. He not only is our treasurer, but he is the anchor for our newsletter, the website, the association photographer; creator of our administrative forms, the impetus behind Washington State forming their own association and I am sure there are more accomplishments that I’ve overlooked. And last, but not least, a thank you to Bruce Porter whom I turned to many a time as a valued advisor.

I would be remiss at this time if I did not acknowledge those that opened their homes for association gatherings. On behalf of the association, thank you.

Purpose

by Elizabeth Cratty

What is the purpose of our organization?

Is it to dazzle each other with our poetry, write essays and articles about the retreats and conferences we attend where we glad hand with each other, pray together and share fellowship? Is it to share spiritual insights with other like-minded believers?
Yes. Of course. All of that. But I think there’s more, and while we engage in these pleasurable fellowshipping activities naturally, we ought to focus our attentions and our resources on outreach.

A week spent at 533 Diversey Parkway changed my opinion about many things. One of those is the funding of translations. The translation work that is currently being completed is of phenomenal importance, and it is at unimaginable expense. If I am a believer in the message of The Urantia Book, then I better be contributing to the spiritual uplifting of the planet by supporting and contributing to the translation work. I was somehow under the impression that the translators were volunteers, but that is not the case. In addition to the expense of hiring professional translators, there is the small matter of printing the book in the foreign language (after it’s been proofread and the rest of the lengthy, very expensive process), staffing an office and finding local and regional distribution channels. Enormously expensive. One of the women I met during my visit said that for Christmas, she was giving her friends twelve stamped envelopes, addressed to the Foundation, tied up with a ribbon. Funding translations was that important to her.

If each one of us is not donating a dollar a month or ten dollars a month or twenty dollars a month to the translation fund, then we are not practicing what we think we’re preaching by carrying Jesus’ message about the kingdom. We aren’t apostles, we aren’t disciples. We’re those who tarry and discuss, but do not act.

Soon, I believe there will be a sanctioned, comprehensive advertising program suggested by the Foundation, something that can be put into practice and locally funded and locally implemented by study groups, associations, and individuals. As an association, we ought to commit to a steady program of advertising funding. We spend a lot of money on our newsletter, and a stellar publication it is. But it only goes to those of us who already have been gifted with the sublime revelation. What about those who are still seeking?

As we embark upon the new year, I hope we will all rededicate ourselves to doing the Father’s work, as individuals and as an organization.

Advice Column

Ask Dodger

.

by Dodger

Dear Dodger:

My teenage son is lethargic these days. His grades are failing and it seems that the only thing that interests him is video games. What should I do?
  --Worried Dad

Dear Worried:
Remember the patience Jesus showed with his younger brothers and sisters? He understood that they were young and inexperienced, as are we all. If your son is like most teens, he’s also relatively terrified about the future. Be calm with him. Let him know that until the time when he must lean on his Heavenly Father for guidance, he has you, and that you will never let him down, no matter what. And then make good on that promise. Every day.

Dear Dodger:
I haven’t had a good hair day in months, I can’t seem to shed the five or so pounds I put on over the holidays, my wardrobe needs a facelift along with my face, and if the sun doesn’t come out soon, I think I’m going to punch somebody. Help!
   --Frustrated Frances

Dear Fran:
Being spiritually fragrant has nothing to do with hair, wardrobe, ounces, wrinkles, or weather. Being calm in the face of frustration, then taking steps to remedy the frustrating situation is that which inspires ourfellows. Remember that in most cases, frustration is indecision. So make a decision, but not just any decision. Make The Decision, to do the will of the Father in Heaven, and then relax and know that he wants you to be challenged and stimulated toward growth, but at peace.

Oregon Prison Study Group

Letter to OUA

I have recently been contacted by a Chaplain at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem. She’s had several inmates inquire about organizing a Urantia Book study group among themselves. Prison policy requires that an outside representative personally facilitate these types of meetings. IUA is the outreach organization that would typically lead such an initiative, so I’ve directed this post to the local president and some active members, aswell as other readers in your area who might wish to become involved. My time constraints here preclude much other than a liaison role in this plea for service, but I’m hopeful that among yourselves you can determine if there is interest and how best to proceed.

Liz, I know you spearheaded the Prison Library Placement Program, and believe me, it has borne plentiful fruit. I get volumes of mail from inmates all around the country who have found solace in the revelation during a challenging time in their life. Some of the letters we receive say little more than “Please send me a book.” But many are sincere, grateful, in-depth, and confessional of poor decision-making. Among those who expressthemselves, there emerges a strong desire to discover spiritual truth and progress in their understanding of the religious and cosmic values taught in the book.

This is a serious service request for precious time in your busy lives. If there is not a willingness to participate for this and the other obvious reason, I will understand and let the Chaplain know. I’ll leave it to you to discuss, and please feel free to widen this call to those who you think might take an active interest. Keen knowledge of The Urantia Book, study group experience, a desire to share the teachings, and a sober approachregarding realities inside the walls are the basic requirements. I’ll have to double-check on the rules, but a two-person team would seem like a good arrangement, and perhaps a rotating schedule of facilitators to spread the load and offer diversity of experience (for all participants).

So, we ask for your help or at least your advice. See what you all think and please be in contact if you have any questions or needs. I have already sent additional books upon request for their library and for those in isolation. Thank you for your attention and I’ll await some word before communicating with the Chaplain.

In friendship,

How do you find out and do God’s will daily?
How can we better attune to our Adjusters?

It was Jesus’ daily practice to talk to his Father—the parent/child relationship. Daily communication (communion) with our Father is developing over time, like with any relationship, an understanding of that person.  What fosters this intimate relationship is love and devotion.  How do we attune ourselves with our Adjusters? It’s through this daily practice that we become attuned to his desires for us and others.
—Jeanette Schaffer

I affirm daily that it is my Will that the Father’s Will be done in my life, now and for evermore. Be still and listen for your Adjuster.
—Rawlins Apperson

It seems that sincerely seeking his will, day in and day out, is about the only way to find it. And perhaps we are never really *sure* that we’ve found his will until afterwards, when we can look back at a part of our lives.
—Joy Brandt

God’s will is that we become evermore Godlike. God is not a micromanager. We are to use our gifts, our unique personality, our knowledge and influence to make ourselves and the world more Godlike.
We can attune with our adjuster by practicing Godlikeness. God is Love. God is Unity. God is truth, beauty and goodness. Only by loving can we approach understanding the infinite love of God. Only by striving for Unity of self and of humanity can we begin to understand that aspect of God. We are told that here we do this by service. By service demonstrate and practice love, we promote unity and we enhance truth beauty and goodness. This practice makes us more Godlike in thought and action. Attunement with the thought adjuster is enhanced.
Prayer and worship also are means of attunement with the thought adjuster.
—Jerry Prentice

Pray and worship, if the book is to be believed.
—Rick Warren

I ask myself some basic questions: Is this something that is in opposition to his word? For example, does it break one of the ten commandments? Is it an act of love? We all know full well that our greatest charge is to “love”. Finally, I submit it to my inner self and ask myself: how does it feel, does it track with my better sense of fairness, compassion and honesty. If what I want to do or say passes these basic and simple test, I move on with the knowledge that I am “in God’s will”. Pretty simple actually and only takes a second or two.
—John Zingg

With my wife’s fight and victory over breast cancer and with my mother’s planetary graduation on November 1, the last year was one filled with reflection and soul searching for me. What has come to me stronger than ever is that the value of a person, their lasting legacy, is not so much what they owned or even accomplished as it is the values which they held the highest and to which they were most loyal. So my way of trying to find and know God’s will on a daily basis is to reorient myself to the philosophic universe, to see the Truth, Beauty and Goodness in the smallest and largest of actions. On those days when I find myself falling short, I reattune by thanking God for the Truth I do know, and asking Her if I can be of service and do better.
—Lee Armstrong

I find God’s will first thing in the morning. When we awake my husband and I do Lectio Divina. We read mostly what Jesus taught, just a section, not very long. We each read out loud while the other listens. The Spirit of Truth is so strongly present that we feel we are in the presence of the Master. The amazing thing is that the intensity of this experience is the same for both of us, day after day. We listen and reflect afterwards, sometimes we discuss how the lesson applies to our lives, sometimes we don’t. We always marvel at the wonder of the experience. We can’t believe how lucky we are! We’ve been doing this together for over a year now and we both agree it’s the best thing in our lives.

I also practice Centering Prayer in my meditation room, when I can. I don’t enjoy it as much as Lectio Divina or being in nature, but I’m told that it might help me become more patient and loving. I’m willing to persist.  I feel closest to God when I’m serving others, praying for others and expressing my gratitude. But I must say there’s really not a time when I don’t feel my Thought Adjuster in me, even when I’m being willful and uncooperative.
—Sue Tennant

Ask. Consistent and wholehearted cooperation—-when one can manage it—-is what wins. The rules of prevailing petitions on p. 1002 serve as a thorough prayer process, and the four points on the bottom of 1206 are my favorite answer to this second question. (See Ed Owen’s quotes left).
—Jeff Wattles

Worship, worship, worship.
P.1123 - §5 Prayer is indeed a part of religious experience, but it has been wrongly emphasized by modern religions, much to the neglect of the more essential communion of worship. The reflective powers of the mind are deepened and broadened by worship. Prayer may enrich the life, but worship illuminates destiny.
—Stephen Caruso

Good questions, first part by asking God questions, and listening for his reply. Second part of question:
P.1206 - §4 You must not regard co-operation with your Adjuster as a particularly conscious process, for it is not; but your motives and your decisions, your faithful determinations and your supreme desires, do constitute real and effective co-operation. You can consciously augment Adjuster harmony by:
P.1206 - §5 1. Choosing to respond to divine leading; sincerely basing the human life on the highest consciousness of truth, beauty, and goodness, and then co-ordinating these qualities of divinity through wisdom, worship, faith, and love.
P.1206 - §6 2. Loving God and desiring to be like him--genuine recognition of the divine fatherhood and loving worship of the heavenly Parent.
P.1206 - §7 3. Loving man and sincerely desiring to serve him--wholehearted recognition of the brotherhood of man coupled with an intelligent and wise affection for each of your fellow mortals.
—Ed Owen

One of my favorite statements in the book having to do with the will of the Father is the following:
“The doing of the will of God is nothing more or less than an exhibition of creature willingness to share the inner life with God—the very God who has made such a creature life of inner meaning-value possible.” pg1221:2

And we are told, as well:
“The religion of Jesus is the most dynamic influence ever to activate the human race. Jesus shattered tradition, destroyed dogma, and called mankind to the achievement of its highest ideals in time and eternity--to be perfect, even as the Father in heaven is perfect.” pg1091:21
In contemplating both quotes along with Jesus’ lifetime practice of time spent with the Father, I am reminded of the saying that goes something like “the more time spent with someone, the more one becomes like them.”

‘Tis truly a gift of intimacy offered by the Father to share our cares, our joys, our sorrows, the exhilaration and exhaustion of our decision making; and when the offer is accepted it so often results in a spontaneous offering of thanksgiving for blessings as well as challenges; this then seems to naturally segue into a place of worship....the most sublime time spent in the presence of another.

In this practice, I am able to be less concerned intellectually with the will of the Father, and am more able to move through my days with a calm, a confidence, and a peace that provides for clarity.... for a sense of his presence in any given moment.
—Judy Van Cleave

This is one of my favorite passages:
“To every spirit being and to every mortal creature in every sphere and on every world of the universe of universes, the Universal Father reveals all of his gracious and divine self that can be discerned or comprehended by such spirit beings and by such mortal creatures. God is no respecter of persons, either spiritual or material. The divine presence which any child of the universe enjoys at any given moment is limited only by the capacity of such a creature to receive and to discern the spirit actualities of the supermaterial world.”

In order to understand the divine will, we must sincerely and wholeheartedly do all that we can to increase our capacity to receive and to discern the father’s will.
“Jesus taught that the prayer for divine guidance over the pathway of earthly life was next in importance to the petition for a knowledge of the Father’s will. In reality this means a prayer for divine wisdom. Jesus never taught that human knowledge and special skill could be gained by prayer. But he did teach that prayer is a factor in the enlargement of one’s capacity to receive the presence of the divine spirit. When Jesus taught his associates to pray in the spirit and in truth, he explained that he referred to praying sincerely and in accordance with one’s enlightenment, to praying wholeheartedly and intelligently, earnestly and steadfastly.”

As for attuning to our Adjusters:
“When the development of the intellectual nature proceeds faster than that of the spiritual, such a situation renders communication with the Thought Adjuster both difficult and dangerous. Likewise, overspiritual development tends to produce a fanatical and perverted interpretation of the spirit leadings of the divine indweller. Lack of spiritual capacity makes it very difficult to transmit to such a material intellect the spiritual truths resident in the higher superconsciousness. It is to the mind of perfect poise, housed in a body of clean habits, stabilized neural energies, and balanced chemical function—when the physical, mental, and spiritual powers are in triune harmony of development—that a maximum of light and truth can be imparted with a minimum of temporal danger or risk to the real welfare of such a being. By such a balanced growth does man ascend the circles of planetary progression one by one, from the seventh to the first.”
—Nancy Shaffer

Today’s Revelation

by Gary Mullinix

I am sure the early Christians found themselves, as we do, with the ground shifting beneath their feet, as they sifted thru the truths they beheld and plotted for themselves a new direction, to ensure the revelation they were given would not be lost nor have been given to them in vain.

We have the luxury of examining their shortcomings from a two-millennium distance, as they interjected the theologies and cultures of their day into their exposure to revelation, thereby regrettably victimizing the simplicity of Christ’s gospel. But how will future generations see our own attempts to nurture and promote the revelation we are given? Will we do better?, because as the revelation of Christ 2000 years ago proves, a lot of the success of any revelation depends upon those people unto which it is initially entrusted.

So many possibilities are evident for TUB; it could be warped into a creed rooted in worshipping the infallibility of the book; it could be absorbed and defined by metaphysical new (actually old) age thought; it could be considered pure fantasy; it could be dismissed as a fraud or elitist in its applications; it could be forgotten as it, like so many other theologies, tend to become houses of fatally faith divided within themselves, loosing worldly appeal; or perhaps we can remain focused and start in our own lives making the hard decisions it takes to dedicate our lives to the whole truth we have been given, with the no reservation, keeping our hearts and minds on God, in which condition God will hopefully find us when he comes looking and needs our services to complete his will.

The first century believers no doubt looked back on their predecessors with some of the same incredulity many today place upon them. We have yet to be called to task on our handling of the new revelation of our day. It assuredly won’t be any easier for us, in fact it most likely will be more difficult today given the rampant secular humanism, materialism, hedonism, sophistries of false liberty, and surpluses of personal powers available to seduce and charm the many into elevating self or anybody or anything above God the Father.

Welcome to 3002

Imagine for a moment: it is now the year 3002.
The Fifth Epochal Revelation is a success.
List three things that happened in the last 1,000 years.

One language, one world government, and one religion.
—Rawlins Apperson

The religion of the spirit—personal religious experience—has dominated the world. Organized religion as we know it - has become an Interfaith liaison, permeated with spiritual tendencies while still valuing rituals and scriptures.
Family life has become more intimate and valued. Divorce is rare.
We have perfected world government and we are preparing for Michael’s return.
—Sue Tennant

People have begun to realize that it is not what book you read or what name you have for God or the name of your religion that determines your spiritual status.  Rather it is that you personally know God, by whatever name, and are dedicated to serving God and consequently serving your fellow man.
Service motive has replaced profit motive
The world is a more peaceful place
–Jerry Prentice

All believers have united into one worldwide organization that has been progressively serving and fostering the spiritual brotherhood of mankind on this planet.
A Magisterial Son or Trinity Teacher Son or some other higher personality has come to inaugurate the sixth epochal revelation of truth to Urantia.
Those who believe in God all recognize him as a loving Father and that he indwells the minds of each of us.
–Joy Brandt

I finally got to Mansonia 5.
I mastered the fact that procrastination is not an appropriate universal technique for solving problems.
I gave Michael a big hug!
Oh, and back on Urantia, the Chicago Cubs finally won a Worlds Series.  :)
–Lee Armstrong

Love, love and more love--for God is LOVE!
—Jeanette Schafer

No more war, jails are empty, and I believe our quarantine will have been lifted for some time.
–Ed Owen

We had a spiritual renaissance, and we turned to new leadership for the reorganization of our planet. The rest is speculation.
–Jeff Wattles

War has ended, Urantia is united under the rule of the Most Highs andthe internal combustion engine died an agonizing, fitful death.
–Rick Warren

The world has one language.
The races are well on their way to unification.
The Urantia Book is universally accepted.
Justice is abounding

The vegan races have shed 1/10 of their meat eating vestiges. :)
P.593 - §7 Primitive man is for the most part carnivorous; the Material Sons and Daughters do not eat meat, but their offspring within a few generations usually gravitate to the omnivorous level, although whole groups of their descendants sometimes remain nonflesh eaters. This double origin of the post-Adamic races explains how such blended human stocks exhibit anatomic vestiges belonging to both the herbivorous and carnivorous animal groups.
P.593 - §8 Within ten thousand years of racial amalgamation the resultant stocks show varying degrees of anatomic blend, some strains carrying more of the marks
P.594 - §0 of the nonflesh-eating ancestry, others exhibiting more of the distinguishing traits and physical characteristics of their carnivorous evolutionary progenitors.
–Stephen Caruso

An overwhelming desire to do good to others is taking a firm hold in the majority of the peoples of the planet.
Character building and truth seeking are becoming the prized pursuits of existence.
The rampant pursuit of pleasure and profit are steadily being supplanted by the desire to serve one’s fellows in more and more meaningful and lasting ways.
—Judy Van Cleave

Jeanette read a letter she had received from the Utah Urantia Association. The Utah Association wrote that they were enjoying growth and success with their project of holding study groups in bookstores and libraries.
Guidelines for future elections were suggested and discussed. They will be posted on the website.

Treasurer’s Report

We have balance of $584.35. Mario suggested that we switch over to mailing the newsletter electronically. It was thought by all to be a great idea and we will try this for our next newsletter.

New Business

(1) Setting up a Urantia Book booth at the Saturday Market in Portland during the Christmas shopping season put in motion.

A. Money was allocated for the purchase of a canopy and tarps for the construction of a booth.

B. It was suggested that it would be a good idea to sell some items to try and recoup expenses. Mario said he could make some morontia mota refrigerator magnets, and Bruce said that he could produce some nature photographs with quotes from the Urantia Book.

At this point I would like to add that the Urantia Book booth was a good thing to do, but December proved to be a bad time of year to try an outdoors booth. The Urantia Foundation was very supportive sending us lots of materials and different translations. Some books were sold. Some contacts were made, and the readers that volunteered at the booth had good experiences meeting and talking to interested people that stopped by the booth. I would also like to thank Joy Brandt for all of her hard work and dedication to this and many other projects. We will try more of this when the weather is better.

 (2) Liz is going to try and start a college course at L.C.C. And she would like suggestions on what the class should include and how it should be listed in the catalog.

 (3) It was suggested that it might be a good idea to use theater advertising to promote study groups.

The next meeting for the Oregon Urantia Association will be March 17, 2002 at Dennis Gray’s house at 12 p.m. 3015 NW Wilson St., Portland, Oregon.
